Ode To A Louisiana Sinkhole

Of all the holes I’d like to fall into
I think I’d like to fall into you most.
Are there dinosaurs down there inside you?
Is Atlantis there? Are rocket ships there?

If I fell far enough down into you
would a woman wearing a pelt catch me
and would I wake up with her holding me
as a zeppelin hummed flying overhead?

I can feel the Earth move under my feet
and you are like a crucible bubbling—
Water and salt and whatever oil is,

methane rising like messages of love,
and I would turn into gold falling down
inside you until your fire melted me.
