Friday I Visited A Haunted House (A Befuddlement)
Our friendship is a haunted house story.
At first it was a cottage. A refuge.
Tea in the kitchen. Ice cream on the porch.
Cool conversations in the library.
Then it was odd sounds from just out of sight.
A cold breeze but all the windows are shut.
A book no one’s reading falls off a shelf.
Then it was empty. An abandoned thing.
A shape. Hollow. House-shaped, but just a shape.
We walked outside it. Looked in. Stayed away.
Then it was a strange, silly memory.
We stood outside. Looked in. Dared each other
to go inside. One last walk through the house.
We held hands. Walked in. And ran out screaming.
